Embedded C Programming

Embedded C is the use of the C programming language for embedded systems development, with direct hardware register access and memory-mapped I/O.

What is Embedded C?

Embedded C relies on the same syntax as standard C but is tailored for microcontrollers. It involves cross-compiling code to run on a specific architecture (like ARM Cortex-M), managing limited memory, and interacting directly with hardware peripherals.

How We Use It

  • Firmware Development: Writing the core logic for all our bare-metal and RTOS-based systems.
  • HAL Drivers: Utilizing or writing Hardware Abstraction Layers to interface with MCU peripherals.
  • Peripheral Drivers: Creating custom drivers for external sensors, displays, and communication ICs.

Technical Details

Our approach to Embedded C focuses on reliability and deterministic execution. We utilize register-level programming for critical tasks, careful interrupt handling to avoid race conditions, and Direct Memory Access (DMA) for efficient data transfers. Memory management is strictly controlled, typically avoiding dynamic allocation (malloc/free) in favor of statically allocated pools to prevent fragmentation and crashes in long-running systems.
